Super DIRT Week XXXVIII Coverage
Unlike a year ago when
his no. 2 Palmer's Service-B-Dry TEO Pro Car was the
center of attention on opening day, Ronnie Johnsons
brand new black Big-Block ride slipped under the radar
after dark while making the grade on its first attempt
with little fanfare. Rules today are too good
to come up with something that exotic, said Johnson,
responding to the ruckus that last years car created,
leading some to try and compare it to the revolutionary
no. 112 Continental Mark X/I Lincoln-bodied Big-Block
ground-effects car driven by Gary Balough in the 1980
fall classic which forever changed the Syracuse landscape.
Ive been working with Bobby (Hearn, chassis
designer) for the past month going back and forth to
Jersey, weve got a one of a kind car but nothing
to get worked up over. Were already behind the
8-ball after breaking our primary engine on the dyno
Sunday. Weve got a back-up but Syracuse is a place
you want to come loaded with your best stuff, well
just have to see what happens, added Johnson,
whose father Jack Johnson became the first New Yorker
to win the Rite Aid 200 in 1979, then repeated in 1984.
After a serious crash sidelined him over the summer,
Jumpin Jack is expected to return to Syracuse
over the weekend to support his sons latest bid
to finally master the Moody Mile.

Ronnie
Johnson wins again at Albany-Saratoga
9-13-09
MALTA Two and 11 were the lucky numbers at Albany-Saratoga
Speedway Sunday as the regular season at the historic
Malta track came to a close.
Ronnie
Johnson came away with his second consecutive win in
the 35-lap 358-modified feature, and Ken Tremont Jr.
walked off with his 11th point championship in the premier
division.
Johnson
made it look easy as he came away with his 16th career
win at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. After starting 10th,
Johnson only needed 10 laps to get to the front. With
the race being stopped by just one yellow flag, on lap
seven, Johnson got into lapped traffic and easily outran
Tremont and Matt DeLorenzo, who finished second and
third, respectively.
I
almost wish the season was just starting, said
Johnson in victory lane after the race.
But
in the final tally, Tremont was an overwhelming 92 points
ahead of Johnson as he won the track championship for
the third straight season.
Everything
went well for us all season long, said Tremont,
who finished the year with five wins and 14 top-five
finishes in 15 starts.
Todd
Ryan hung on for fourth in the final points race of
the season, and Jeff Trombley was fifth. Ryan's finish
matched his best of the year in the Percy Barber-owned
small block.
Dave
Constantino, who climbed behind the wheel of the John
Kollar-owned sportsman midway through the season, got
his first win in that division while Mark Kislowski
used a second-place finish in the Morris Auto Group/NYAutoguide-sponsored
small block to earn the first track championshiup of
his career. Rich Ronca finished third in the feature
on Sunday, followed by Chris Busta and Ken Anatriello.

Ronnie
Johnson wins at Albany-Saratoga
9-4-09 MALTA Ronnie Johnson saved his best for
last.
After
taking the lead on lap 11, Johnson held off Brett Hearn
to record his first win of the season Friday night in
the 358-modified feature at Albany-Saratoga Speedway.
This
has been a frustrating season, said Johnson after
the feature. To end the season with a win here
is great.
Albany-Saratoga
Speedway will end its points season on Friday, Sept.
11, but Johnson has already said he'll be competing
elsewhere that night.
Hearn,
behind the wheel of the Wentworth-sponsored small block,
nearly stole the win away from Johnson. A caution with
six laps to go put Hearn right on Johnson's rear bumper,
and Hearn momentarily took the lead on the restart.
But Johnson rocketed down the backstretch and was back
in front by the time the leaders cleared turn three,
and he beat Hearn to the finish line by nearly a full
second to chalk up the 15th win of his career at the
Malta track.
Points
leader Ken Tremont Jr., Don Ronca and Dave Camara completed
the top five.
Point
champions in all division will be crowned on Friday.
Sept.11 on the final night of the regular season. It
will also be Hometown Heroes Night, with all law enforcement
officers, firefighters and EMT personnel being admitted
free of charge. Additional information about Hometown
Heroes Night can be found on the Web at www.cvra.com.
